ELIZABETH CATLETT

Artist Background

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Elizabeth Catlett frequently dealt with themes of race and gender, often celebrating the strength and endurance of women of color in her work. Catlett reveals an extraordinary technical virtuosity, trained as an artist, sculptor and printmaker in the United States.

Throughout her career, Catlett has been committed to improving the lives of African-American and Mexican women, and she has often used her art explicitly to advance their cause. Catlett relocated to Mexico in 1946, where she married a Mexican artist, became a Mexican citizen, and raised three children.

Catlett blends her African American, Mexican, female, and artistic selves to create unique works that examine issues of identity. Throughout her career, Catlett has shown a commitment to highlighting the achievements and struggle of women of color.
